I really do look forward to Halloween each year. And here’s the reason why….it’s just FUN, that’s all. We carved our pumpkin tonight and had a great time. Randy is the master pumpkin carver and has done intricate designs in the past but this year Mitchell just wanted the basic Jack-o-lantern style pumpkin so that’s what we did. I toast pumpkin seeds every year and still nobody ever wants to try them. I add something different each year to make them more yummy and appealing but to no avail.
This year Sophie is going to be Snow White and Mitchell is Batman. I have worn the bat hat in the pictures below for the last seven years on Halloween and I’m so sick of these hats. I need a new getup real bad. Don’t tell anyone, but I bought a Nun costume but then took it back because after all, I am a 30 something year old….and she’s dressing up? Oh the fear of man restrains me and I hate that it does….otherwise I would be donning an amazing Nun or Whoopie Cushion costume Saturday night.
But I just need to say that I’m feeling a little naughty and rebellious for enjoying Halloween so much. Apparently some people really hate Halloween and approach it with much “trembling”. I don’t know, I’m okay with it because as a family, we just have fun with dressing up, trick or treating and pumpkin carving. We aren’t “giving the devil a day” or inviting his demons to come and play with us. We’re just having fun, that’s all. I don’t even really want to say I’m celebrating “Harvest” to cover for the fact that I just like Halloween. And I don’t want my kids to have to dress up as Abraham and Sarah to make us feel better about having fun at Halloween. Am I being a rebel? I don’t feel it in my heart.
What do you guys do for Halloween? And what are your thoughts on a pastor’s family doing Halloween? Do you think it’s different for a pastor than any other person? Just curious. Don’t beat me up okay……because you just never know the damage that a large, afro wearing, white woman can do….on Halloween weekend! Heeeee-----Heeeeeee----Heeeeeee---- Heeeee (that was my wicked witch laugh that comes out of me when I don’t even try sometimes. I’m SOOOO Kidding!!!!)
Yes, as a matter of fact, I did type this post while wearing my afro.

You are so funny Melody!! Love it.
I love Halloween, too. It's funny, I know there are a lot of Christians who believe Halloween is celebrating evil....but I don't personally know any.
I'm hosting a Halloween party on Saturday...so I guess that demonstrates my stand on the topic. Have fun trick or treating and dressing up!
My brother and I have always loved Halloween a little more than normal people. We don't know where it came from but we love all things spooky. It really just brings back lots of good childhood memories for me. There was actually a book I read a while back about christians celebrating Halloween and why it's okay to do so (gasp!) I love the bat hats, by the way.
We love Halloween too! I love your thoughts on this and I agree 100%. I have started the tradition of wearing a different wig each year. This year I got a BLONDE afro--I thought this may be less offensive--and a headband with bat antennae, and some bubba teeth to finish off the look. Anna is mortified but I'm wearing it anyway. Do you think I'll scare our new neighbors? Our kids are already scared of me. :-)
I'd love to see a pic of the blonde afro....that's offensive to me! Hilarious!!! You need to post some pics on your blog....hint, hint.
Well, I don't see a thing wrong with having good, innocent fun on Halloween. Dressing up, carving pumpkins, eating candy, and toasting pumpkin seeds (that your family won't eat) are all fun family activities! Hope you have a great weekend! Love the pics.
The kids at my school dressed up for our "storybook parade" today. They all looked so cute...and I even had one dress as a whoopie cushion - hilarious!!!
The 3rd grade teachers dressed as rock stars because "3rd grade rocks!" I had a red and black punk-looking wig, a black "rock-on" shirt, slightly ripped jeans and all the accessories. It was a BLAST!
You're so funny! We love it too :) So this pastor's family is with you.
Hilarious! LOVE the wig! If I could have an afro, I would. Or dreads, I love dreads. :)
Anyway, a family at our church put it this way...we will participate in Halloween, but we will not celebrate it. As a family, they will do all the family fun things, but there will be no participation in the dark, ungodly side of Halloween. I think this is the stance we'll take with our kids too. As long as you're not doing something that is against God or His Word, there's nothing wrong with it! And, even more, what other night of the year is almost all of your neighborhood out interacting with one another? And, what would it say if you locked your doors and turned off the lights to keep them all out? Humm...I say, HAVE FUN!!
