Sophie is in that stage where she has just about mastered the spelling of her name and she writes it everywhere and all the time. And this is why I have a cute story to share today.
Sophie came to me in a soft whisper and said, “I have something to show you but it’s a secret.” She showed me Madeline’s puppy dog and where she had drawn in washable marker a smiley face on the tag. I smiled and half mindlessly said, “that’s cute, Sophie.” A few minutes later she came to me and held up Madeline in front of my face. Again I said, “Yep, she’s a cute little doll.” And then she lifted Madeline’s red yarn bangs and showed me her signature. She looked at me bright eyed and said, “Shhhh, it’s a secret.” I had to grin at the cleverness of the placement of her signature. What a keepsake and now we have a doll that will never enter a garage sale over my dead body. Of course we had to take it one scary step further and match the doll……
I know, I know….I shouldn’t have encouraged that because now her name is most likely going to appear on a wall somewhere in the house. I still think that would actually be cute but I did give her the “only on paper/don’t destroy property” talk. The other thing I’m thinking we’re close to is her cutting her bangs. She hates the feel of her bangs on her forehead. We got them cut the other day and she has been begging me to let her get them cut all the way to the top of her head. Of course she has no idea what she’s talking about and how ridiculous that would look so I’m trying hard to explain to her by showing her my bangs and that she has to grow them out but that it takes a looooong time and is a pain in the batookey to do. I’ve not said, “Don’t ever cut your hair” and I don’t really want to say that to her but I’m sort of just feeling like the day is coming soon where she tries it. If it was a little chunk it would probably be cute but with as confident as Sophie is I feel like she’d sit herself in a chair in front of the mirror and just go for a totally new hairstyle. Who knows. But you can know for sure I’ll post pictures of any cosmetology attempts on behalf of the Sophers!
Ha! Sophie just looked at this picture of herself and sighed real deep and said, “Ughhhh, you made the ‘S’ that way??!!??
And this is why she said that……
Love this backwards “S” in Sophie’s name. She was devastated when I had to break it to her that it was backwards. She cried seriously defeated tears. It was almost like she was embarrassed that she had been spelling it wrong for the last few weeks. We tried to make a correct “S” but it’s still hard for her to do. I tried to console her that it was okay because she’s still learning. I even resorted to using the plate I made in first grade with messed up letters as an example but she wasn’t too comforted by that. She looked at me like, “Dudette, you needed some serious help if you were in first grade and still couldn’t get letters right!” Oh well, at least I tried to make her feel better.
And can I share one more piece of art with you?
This is Mitchell’s Christmas Card he created for our school fundraiser. It is the nativity scene complete with the phonetic spelling of “Feliz Navidad”. His art teacher pulled Randy aside and said, “I had to show this to you because it’s so Mitchell.” I’m so glad she appreciates Mitchell’s creative flare. I’m especially liking God the Spirit riding the cloud of fire like a skateboard. That’s Mitchell’s interpretation of the Spirit of God hovering over the nativity. I wasn’t there so I’m not going to knock it. Part of me is uncomfortable with this but I sense absolutely no sarcasm or sacrilege in his spirit when he tells me about this picture. And the other figure that looks like an angel to the left of the star of David is actually not an angel. I was corrected on that by the artist himself. It’s in fact God the Father looking down on God the Son while God the Spirit is riding on a cloud. Hey, I’m just sayin’ the kid has some pretty dang good theology going on. And I will definitely be buying this box of cards. If you would like to place an order feel free to let me know because one day you just might see this in an art gallery. Ha! I love my boy in all his creativity!!!

What treasures! I love it all. Especially the phonetic spelling. So great. I can not wait to see what God has for both of your kids!
